Abstract

ThapsiaGarganica (T.G.) is one of the poisonous plants of the plant kingdom. Many reports of deaths for various animal species, including sheep. This study aimed to clarify T.G. toxicity's pathogenesis and describe and document post-mortem changes due to T.G. toxicity in sheep. Ten native sheep were brought from the free T.G. area, and were divided randomly into two groups, 6 sheep were allocated to the experimental group, and 4 served as control sheep in the experimental group 6 sheep were dosed orally using crushed seeds mixed with water a dose of (2g/kg of animal weight). All experimental animals were expressed a slight increase in body temperature, 3 animals were expressed a slight increase in respiration rate, and 4 animals were showed milled diarrhea after 24 hours which changed to watery and mild bloody diarrhea after 48 hours and no death. Laboratory investigation hematological, liver function and renal function were showed no significant differences between control and experimental animals. Contrary to expectations and from sheep keepers experience, the animals did not develop severe toxicity symptoms. 7animals) 3control and4test(were slaughtered after72hours from oral administration of T.G..The postmortem inspection were showed that carcasses were found well in general body condition. The gastrointestinal tract showed mild to moderate sub mucosa edema in most parts, with mild sub mucosal petechial hemorrhage swore observed. In summary, surprisingly there were no death have been reported, which open a new window for more investigation of Thapsia toxicity to domestic animals.
